Aldi has claimed a fourth consecutive win in our latest ‘Super’ Grocer 33 pricing survey, which pitches the two leading discounters against the traditional supermarket giants.
The victory gives Aldi a clean sweep in its head to head with arch-rival Lidl for the current Grocer 33 year.
In a basket dominated by basic own-label goods (plus 10 branded items), Aldi’s £59.44 total was 56p cheaper than the equivalent products in Lidl’s basket. Aldi offered the lowest price for 20 items, though it was only exclusively cheapest for two – the honey and milk.
Lidl, meanwhile, was cheapest for 22 items and exclusively so for four: the apple & mango juice, Heinz Beanz, Pepsi Max and salmon.
As usual when we pit the discounters against each other, it was a two-horse race. Aldi was 10.1% cheaper than third-placed Asda’s £66.14 total.
To be fair, Asda has made no promises to match – let alone be cheaper than – the discounters, but last week in its Q1 results it said it was opening up a 3%-6% price gap to its traditional supermarket rivals.
That wasn’t the case with Tesco where the gap (53p) was just 0.8%. On the other hand, Asda was cheaper than the totals of Sainsbury’s (£70.09) and Morrisons (£70.17) by 5.6% and 5.7% respectively. The gap versus Aldi was significantly larger: £10.65 (or 15.2%) and £10.73 (or 15.3%) respectively.
Waitrose was exclusively cheapest for the Stella Artois and the Tetley teabags. Apart from those two items it was well off the pace. Aldi’s basket was 25.6% cheaper than its £79.85 total – a difference of £20.41.
Across all seven retailers, prices were flat versus a month ago and up 2.4% year on year. Tesco’s basket was cheaper month on month and year on year and was bolstered by the biggest savings: £3.61.
